Just another wintery (despite being "fall") day in Manhattan, just another fifteen taxis going past:

The only place in Sydney you'd see this many taxis is at the airport. Anywhere else and you'd likely keel over and die of shock - or feel sorry for the rest of Sydney since the entire fleet is in one place. (Actually this is not true: Sydney has over 4800 taxis, and NSW has 5900. Still, New York has over 12000.)

Posted by: nicole at November 25, 2005 08:40 AMHmm - if the NY taxi figure is for the five boroughs of NYC, then Sydney and New York have similar numbers of taxis per capita.
In addition, I have seen this concentration of taxis in Sydney, late at night on places like Parramatta Road, Cleveland, Anzac, George St. The reason you don't keel over is because, being white, they have almost no visual impact. All that yellow is like being punched in the face, which anecdotally is also something which is likely to happen in New York.
